Alexandria To Charge Airbnb Tax, First In Virginia
Alexandria will charge an 8.5 percent tax plus $1 per night on Airbnb rooms rented out.

ALEXANDRIA, VA—Beginning April 1, the City of Alexandria will collect taxes on Airbnb listings, becoming the first jurisdiction in Virginia to do so.
According to Airbnb's website, Alexandria will charge an 6.5 percent local tax, 2 percent state tax plus $1 for bookings 29 nights and less. The city estimates it could collect $100,000 in one year from the local tax, The Washington Post reports.
Alexandria's agreement with Airbnb of its kind in Virginia. The city also recently introduced mandatory registration for those doing short-term rentals. So far, just 23 people have registered in the city.

DC and Montgomery County, Maryland have also made agreements with Airbnb. Fairfax County has scheduled public hearings on regulating Airbnb, Insidenova reports.
