ALEXANDRIA, VA — Alexandria firefighters began the annual Fill the Boot collections Tuesday to support the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

Fill the Boot collections benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association's work to help families affected by muscular dystrophy, including research for new treatments, support for care centers and sending children to MDA summer camp. From 2015 to 2019, the Alexandria Fire Department's collections have raised over $230,000 for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

This year's goal is to raise $50,000. The collections are managed by the Alexandria Fire Fighters Local 2141 union with support from on-duty fire department staff, volunteer fire department staff, and off-duty volunteers. Volunteers will also come from other labor groups, including the International Association of Fire Fighters, the Police Benevolent Association, Black Fire Service Professionals of Alexandria, and the Alexandria Professional Medics Association.
