Alexandria's Jefferson Davis Highway Renaming: The Internet Has Suggestions

Alexandria is seeking input on a new name for Jefferson Davis Highway in a survey. See what the internet is suggesting.

ALEXANDRIA, VA—As an Alexandria advisory group continues to take suggestions for removing Confederate leader Jefferson Davis' name from U.S. 1, there have been a variety of suggestions brought up.

The Alexandria City Council voted to remove the name of Confederate leader Jefferson Davis from the city's section of U.S. 1 in 2016. Then in June, the city appointed an advisory group to collect public feedback. The group opened a survey to City of Alexandria and Arlington County residents through Sept. 15.

The change would apply to the portion of the road between Arlington County and the north end of Old Town Alexandria. Arlington County also has representatives in the advisory group in the case that it should get the state's permission for a name change. The portion of U.S. 1 named Jefferson Davis Highway becomes Richmond Highway in Fairfax County, then continues on with the Confederate name in Prince William County.

City spokesperson Craig Fifer told WTOP in May changing road signs could cost around $20,000. The expects to make a recommendation to the city manager in October. Advisory group meetings will be held in the Community Room of The Station at Potomac Yard (650 Maskell St., Alexandria) from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Residents can make up to three name suggestions in the survey. Many have shared their thoughts over the internet, some more serious than others. Here are some of the names Patch readers and social media users have suggested:

  • Mildred and Richard Loving Highway
  • Richmond Highway
  • Abraham Lincoln Highway
  • Patsy Ticer Highway
  • Earl Cook Highway
