Gordon on Thursday, June 4, 2015 at 7pm, for her talk, “Bridging Worlds”, at Del Ray Artisans gallery. This event is a special opportunity to hear about Gordon’s personal journey as an artist in the ten years since Hurricane Katrina ravaged the Mississippi Gulf Coast. This decade has been filled with exhibitions, artist’s talks and workshops across the U.S. Her journey has also expanded to Haiti, throughout Europe, and to the Middle East and North Africa, where she recently opened an art café in the fabled city of Marrakech, Morocco.Lori K. Gordon (www.lorikgordon.org) is a visual artist, writer, teacher, and founder and president of Six Degrees Consortium (www.sixdegreesconsortium.org). Her work may be found in public and private collections around the world, including the Smithsonian Institution, Mississippi Humanities Council, Virginia Commonwealth University, and Art Across Arkansas (a joint venture of Thea Foundation and William J. Clinton Foundation, President Barack and First Lady Michelle Obama, and others). Gordon’s work has been featured on MSNBC, CBS, NPR, in regional magazines, newspapers across the nation, and in several documentaries. She is well known for her Katrina Collection, a body of mixed-media work that incorporates detritus from the U.S.’s worst natural disaster. Six Degrees Consortium, founded by Gordon in 2001, is a 501(c)(3) organization based in Mississippi and dedicated to the idea that visual art can be a powerful means of education and cross-cultural understanding among people.Gordon’s “Bridging Worlds” talk is being held in conjunction with the “Building Bridges” art exhibit at Del Ray Artisans gallery, which runs from June 5–28, 2015. Del Ray Artisans curators Linda Elliff and Barb Boatman and Six Degrees Consortium curator Lori K. Gordon invited Del Ray Artisans members and Mississippi Gulf Coast artists to create works that visually interpret the building of bridges between peoples and cultures.
