Carpenter's Shelter Moves To Landmark Mall In June
The homeless shelter will temporarily move to the closed mall before redevelopment begins.

ALEXANDRIA, VA—Carpenter's Shelter will temporarily move to the Landmark Mall in June from its Old Town location.
With delays to the redevelopment of the mall, the shelter made an agreement with the property owner to move into the vacated Macy's space, NBC Washington reported. Construction crews have worked since March to convert the space into living areas.
The Carpenter's Shelter lease isn't expected to interfere with the mall's redevelopment, as the lease expires in 2019. In the meantime, the shelter's location at 930 N. Henry Street will become a seven-story building including 97 affordable housing units.

The Macy's and the rest of the mall except Sears closed in 2017. Property owner Howard Hughes Corporation is looking to turn the mall into a mixed-use development with apartments, restaurants and retail.
