Charles Severance Murder Trial Moved to Fairfax

Severance, 54, is accused of murdering three prominent Alexandria residents.

A judge has granted a request to move the trial of Charles Severance, accused in three high-profile Alexandria murders, to Fairfax, according to a report by The Washington Post.

The irony: Severance himself said in court today that he was hoping the trial would take place in Alexandria. Severance noted that the trial should take place where the crimes were committed. “I think I should be able to enjoy that right,” the newspaper reported him as saying.

“No self respecting court would accept a bomb out of the mouth of the Alexandria enforcement class,” he said.

NBC-4 reported that Severance also shouted: “Your honor, I do not want a change of venue. May I sit behind that microphone?”

Judge Jane Marum Roush, a Fairfax County Circuit Court judge, also OK’d a request for Severance’s shackles to be removed during transport from the jail to the courthouse, the TV station reported.

Severance, 54, is accused of murdering three prominent Alexandria residents: Ruthanne Lodato, Ron Kirby and Nancy Dunning. Prosecutors have said they will not seek the death penalty.

Lodato was a mother, wife and music teacher killed after being shot on her doorstep Feb. 6, 2014; Kirby was a transportation planner, also shot and killed at his home, on Nov. 11, 2013. Dunning was a real estate agent, shot at her home on Dec. 5, 2003. All were well-liked and all were shot in the middle of the day at their homes.

No word on whether Severance will be moved from Arlington County jail to the Fairfax jail.

Severance is scheduled to go on trial in October.
