Deadline Is Monday To Register To Vote in Primaries

Here's how to register or update your information in the City of Alexandria.

The deadline to register to vote in Virginia’s March 1 Democratic or Republican presidential primaries is Monday, Feb. 8. Virginia voters do not register by political party and may vote in either primary; however, they may not vote in both primaries.

If you have recently moved or updated your registration since the last time you voted, please make sure you are registered at your current address. You may check your registration by clicking here or by contacting the Office of Voter Registration by phone (703.746.4050) or email (anna.leider@alexandriava.gov)

New Registrations

The Alexandria Office of Voter Registration offers the following voter registration methods to U.S. citizens living in Virginia who will be 18 or over by Nov. 8:

  • Submit the application online here prior to midnight Monday.
  • Register in person at the Office of Voter Registration, 132 North Royal St., Suite 100, prior to 5 p.m. Monday.
  • Download an application at alexandriava.gov/Elections then print, sign and mail the completed form to the Office of Voter Registration, 132 North Royal St., Suite 100, Alexandria, VA 22314. Applications must be postmarked on or before Monday, Feb. 8.

The same deadlines are in effect for Virginia voters who are registered, but have moved within the City of Alexandria or within Virginia. Voters who do not update their registration records before the deadline are at risk of being ineligible to vote in this election.

Voter information letters for new or transferred registrants will be mailed within one week of the registration date.

Address Updates

Virginia registered voters who need to update their addresses may do so using any of the methods listed above, or by completing a new voter registration application and faxing it to the Office of Voter Registration, 703.838.6449 (fax) prior to 5 p.m. Monday, Feb. 8.

Absentee Voting and Other Information

Virginians who are registered to vote must show photo identification when voting. Check alexandriava.gov/Elections or call 703.746.4050 for a list of acceptable photo ID and other election information, including sample ballots and in-person absentee voting hours. Absentee voting for this election continues until 5 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 27.
