Del Ray Restaurants Seek to Expand Seating, Add Live Music

The owners of Pork Barrel BBQ, Sushi Bar and Holy Cow would like to add extra outdoor seating and live music.

Del Ray’s Pork Barrel BBQ, Holy Cow and The Sushi Bar are proposing to add and expand outdoor seating and add live entertainment, according to planning documents filed with the City.

Several neighbors have weighed in and have expressed concerns that the area is already congested and that approval of the additional seating, parking reduction and addition of live music will only make the area more crowded.

The proposal is on the Planning Commission’s agenda for its Sept. 1 meeting and includes:

  • Four new seats would be added outdoors in front of Holy Cow.
  • Eight new outdoor seats would be added outside The Sushi Bar.
  • Live entertainment would be added (indoors and likely acoustic). There is no information in the proposal about the hours music would be played; there is also no information available stating whether the music will be allowed at just one restaurant or all three. One stipulation notes that “no amplified sounds shall be audible at the property line,” so it’s presumed that even if music is acoustic, microphones and/or speakers will be used.
  • A three-space parking reduction is requested.
  • An Encroachment on the public right of way is requested, of 1 foot, for the outdoor seating. Planning Commission staff is recommending that a minimum 5 feet of sidewalk access would remain at all times.

Planning Commission staff is recommending that all of the requests be OK’d by the Planning Commission members, stating that the requests are similar to what other restaurants are doing.

Planning staff pointed out that outdoor dining is prohibited on the E. Oxford side of the building.
