Del Ray's First Thursday In August Has Aloha Thursday Theme

UPDATE: First Thursday was rescheduled to Thursday, Aug. 11. School supply donations can be dropped off at 110 E. Del Ray Avenue throughout the week or Pat Miller Neighborhood Square on Aug. 11 during the event.

ALEXANDRIA, VA — Break out your tropical shirts and leis, because Del Ray's next rendition of First Thursday has an Aloha Thursday theme.

The next First Thursday street festival along Mount Vernon Avenue will happen this Thursday from 6 p.m. to dusk. The free event will feature live music, themed activities and more. Attendees are invited to wear their best Hawaiian shirt or attire.

Each First Thursday benefits a different local nonprofit. August's featured nonprofit is Mother of Light Center, a Del Ray-based organization run by volunteers to provide food, clothing and household items to those in need. The organization also provides community programs such as a support group for single mothers and an after-school program.

Attendees can bring donations for Mother of Light Center to Pat Miller Neighborhood Square at Mount Vernon and Oxford Avenues from 6 p.m. to dusk Thursday. Needed items include boxed facial tissues, large pink erasers, 24-count Crayola crayons, Expo dry erase markers, (four-pack, low-odor, chisel tip), pencils, small purple Elmer's glue sticks, 12-inch rulers, 12 count Crayola pre-sharpened colored pencils, blunt-tip scissors, wide-ruled spiral notebooks, pocket folders, highlighters, and Clorox disinfecting wipes.

This month's First Thursday is appropriately sponsored by The Tiki Bar. In the case of inclement weather, the event would be rescheduled to Aug. 11.

First Thursday is held monthly from April to September. The September theme will be Show Your Spirit to celebrate the start of school and return of school sports.
