Domestic Assault Is Alexandria's First Homicide Of 2018

The victim became unconscious during a fight with a relative and later died at the hospital.

Alexandria Police are investigating the city's first homicide of 2018 after a domestic assault Sunday led to fatal injuries.

Around 6:24 p.m. on Sunday, police responded to reports of a fight between family members in the 2200 block of N. Beauregard Street. Police found an unconscious man, who was taken to the hospital.

Nelson Cruz, 28, of Alexandria, died of his injuries at the hospital Wednesday. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner confirmed Thursday that the manner of death was homicide.

His relative, Brian Cruz-Segovia, 23, of Alexandria, was arrested the day of the assault and charged with malicious wounding. Additional charges are possible.
