Drug Take Back Day In Alexandria Is April 28

Residents can drop off unused medications at several locations around Alexandria.

On Saturday, April 28, Alexandria residents can turn in unused medications for Drug Take Back Day.

From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Alexandria sheriff's deputies and police officers will collect unused medications. The collection is anonymous and free.

There are other safe ways to throw away unused medications any other time of the year. The Food and Drug Administration warns individuals to not flush medications, unless it is stated in disposal instructions. Throwing medications in the trash is ok, as long as you follow certain steps to ensure people or animals will not accidentally encounter the drugs. The Drug Take Back Day is a step in addressing the continuing opioid crisis affecting Alexandria and communities across the U.S. According to a new Virginia Department of Health report, the state had 1,534 fatal drug overdoses in 2017, most of which were related to opioids.
