First Lady Michelle Obama Touts Del Ray's 'Courage Wall'

"The #CourageWall is inspiring people of all ages to #ReachHigher and pursue their dreams," she said.

The message behind Del Ray’s “Courage Wall” has grabbed the attention of first lady Michelle Obama.

On Friday, writing from her Twitter account, The First Lady (@FLOTUS), she tweeted: “The #CourageWall is inspiring people of all ages to #ReachHigher and pursue their dreams.”

The Courage Wall is a large public blackboard, located in the 2200 block of Mount Vernon Avenue, erected by resident and leadership coach Nancy Belmont, for anyone to stop by and fill in the answer to “I Wish I Had the Courage to...”

So far, some of the wishes include: ”I wish I had the courage to...”

  • “Take FMLA to get well again”
  • “Share my faith in Jesus”
  • “Love myself”
  • “Learn how to play an instrument”

Belmont has told The Washington Post she was inspired to create the Courage Wall by something she read online and was interested to see how people would respond. She’s also created a Facebook page, We Live Big, that explains more about the project:

“We Live Big is a movement to raise awareness about living life on purpose. It’s about courage and vibrancy. It’s about finding your passion and creating a meaningful life. We encourage people to uncover their authentic selves, continue to grow and make contributions to the world.”

The Courage Wall has also made an appearance on NBC’s Today Show.
