Foster Dog Penny Needs a Home--Sweet, Lazy, Shy, and Goofy--A True Gem of a Pup
Rescue dog Penny is available for adoption through Homeward Trails Rescue.
Penny was found in rural W. VA in July 2015 and brought to a nearby shelter. After a six month stay and with no adoption prospects, she was slated for euthanasia. A local rescue stepped in, contacting Virginia area dog trainers to try and get this girl some help. They noticed that she was very timid and realized she needed someone willing to put in the time to help her learn to trust. That's how Penny came to Alexandria in January 2016.
Penny is available for adoption through Homeward Trails Rescue. She's about six years old She's a low maintenance dog who is shy but goofy, sweet and lazy. When she first came to me, she wouldn't let me (or anyone) get within 6-8 feet of her, let alone touch her. She was very shy and fearful, but even still, her goofy personality shined through. She loves to "sled" in the snow and roll in the dirt. Her expressions are priceless and she truly loves to learn. Her first lesson was to learn a "no thank you" cue because I knew that in order for her to trust me, I needed to let her know that she had a choice. We worked on touch targeting with objects and slowly the physical and emotional gap between us closed. She started hanging out closer to me, and eventually she let me (and others) pet her.
Here we are eight months later and she's a new dog! She's excited when people come to visit and she can't wait to go on walks. She's quite a character, certainly keeps me laughing and has so much love to give. She's ready to find her forever home.

We estimate her to be about six years old. She'll make a fantastic companion for someone; perhaps that someone is you.
