ALEXANDRIA, VA — Alexandria Library brought back a mask requirement Friday for the vaccinated and unvaccinated.

The library cited the city's announcement this week that Alexandria increased to substantial transmission of COVID-19 amid an increase of cases. On Tuesday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention updated its mask guidance recommending masks to be worn in indoor public settings regardless of vaccination status. The city also recommends residents wear a mask in any indoor public settings.

The mandate applies to everyone over age 2. The mask requirement was previously dropped for vaccinated people on June 15.

Alexandria Library said those who fail to comply with the mask requirement will be denied entry. In addition, food and drinks are not allowed in library locations to ensure masks are worn at all times. Access to computers will be limited to two hours with limited assistance from library staff available.

Library hours will remain the same. Earlier in July, libraries expanded to 50 percent capacity and opened all locations on Fridays, as well as Sundays at Beatley Central Library and Duncan Branch Library. Curbside services remain available through scheduling.
