Memorial Day 2018: What's Open, Closed In Alexandria

ALEXANDRIA, VA—Memorial Day weekend is the unofficial start of summer, and many families will be starting off the season by vacationing. But if you're in town, many services normally open on Mondays will be closed for the holiday.
City of Alexandria offices will be closed Monday, May 28. However, services like the recreation centers, Metro and parks will be open, although on a different schedule. If you're looking for things to do, there's plenty going on around the local area.

City of Alexandria Offices: Closed Memorial Day.
Alexandria City Public Schools: Schools and administrative offices will be closed Memorial Day.

State Offices: The Alexandria Circuit Court Clerk’s Office, the Alexandria Circuit Court, the Alexandria General District Court, and the Alexandria Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court will be closed Memorial Day, as well as the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles Office at 2681 Mill Road
Animal Shelter: The Vola Lawson Animal Shelter will be open on May 28 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., with visiting hours beginning at noon.
DASH: DASH bus service will operate on a Sunday schedule on Memorial Day. The free King Street Trolley will operate on its normal schedule, every 10 to 15 minutes, between the King Street Metro Station and the Potomac River Waterfront, from 10:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. For more information, visit dashbus.com.

Health Facilities: The Alexandria Health Department (4480 King St.), the Flora Krause Casey Health Center (1200 N. Howard St.) and the Teen Wellness Center at T.C. Williams High School (3330 King St.) will be closed on Memorial Day.
Historic Alexandria Facilities: The Lyceum will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and the Gadsby’s Tavern Museum and Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Museum will be open from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. All other Office of Historic Alexandria museums will be closed on Memorial Day. Hotlines: All emergency hotlines operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, including the child protective services hotline at 703-746-5800; the domestic violence hotline at 703-746-4911; the emergency services for mental health or substance abuse crisis hotline at 703-746-3401; the adult protective services hotline at 703-746-5778; and the sexual assault hotline at 703-683-7273.
Libraries: All Alexandria Library branches and the Alexandria Law Library (520 King St.) will be closed on Memorial Day.
Metrorail: The system will open at 8 a.m. and close at 11 p.m. Trains will operate on a Sunday schedule. Off-peak fares will be in effect all day, and parking will be free at all Metro parking facilities. There will be scheduled service adjustments on the Red, Orange, Silver, Blue and Yellow lines.
Metrobus: Buses will operate on a Sunday schedule. See bus timetables.
Parking: On Monday, May 28, the Alexandria Police Department will suspend enforcement of parking restrictions for metered spaces, residential permit parking districts, and other areas with posted parking time limits. This suspension of enforcement applies only to the restrictions at legal parking spaces, and does not permit parking in any location normally prohibited (for example, no parking zones, loading zones, or spaces for persons with disabilities). Temporary no-parking signs will be enforced on May 28.
Pools: The Old Town, Warwick and Memorial outdoor pools will be open from 10 a.m. to 5:45 p.m. on May 28. Memorial Pool will not open for the season on Saturday, May 26 due to delays to maintenance work. Visit alexandriava.gov/Aquatics for more information.
Recreation and Arts Centers: The Chinquapin Park Recreation Center will be open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., the Charles Houston Recreation Center will be open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and the Torpedo Factory Art Center will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. All other recreation and arts centers will be closed on Memorial Day.
Trash and Recycling: Residential refuse and recycling will not be collected on Monday, May 28. Collection services will be moved one day later during the week of May 28. The Household Hazardous Waste and Electronics Collection Center (3224 Colvin St.) will be closed on Memorial Day.
