ALEXANDRIA, VA — Engineers have identified a structural issue with a bridge connecting Arlington County and Alexandria, prompting a lane closure.

The southbound lane of the West Glebe Road bridge was closed after inspection by Arlington County engineers. Previously, the other southbound lane was converted to pedestrian use. Sidewalks on both sides of the bridge were closed due to deterioration found in 2018.

Southbound traffic from the West Glebe Road bridge will be detoured to the bridge connecting Arlington Ridge Road with Mount Vernon Avenue. The northbound West Glebe Road bridge remains open with a maximum load of 5 tons.

Engineers are monitoring the bridge structure on a weekly basis. A contract has been awarded for a bridge replacement project with construction starting in April. The estimated completion date for the project would be in 2023.

The localities ask heavier vehicles to comply with the 5-ton weight restriction for public safety reasons.
