Traffic Alert: DWI Enforcement Crackdown in Alexandria Friday Night

The city police will be on the lookout for drivers impaired by alcohol or drugs.

Alexandria Police will conduct a mobile DWI enforcement effort tonight to deter and apprehend intoxicated drivers.

The DWI enforcement will begin at 9 p.m. Friday and continue until 5 a.m. Saturday, the department said on its Facebook page. Motorists will be stopped and checked "to assure that their abilities to drive have not been impaired by alcohol or drugs," the department said.

Police Chief Earl L. Cook reminds drivers that the maximum penalty in Virginia for the first conviction for driving under the influence is 12 months in jail, a $2,500 fine and a 12-month suspension of driving privileges.
