Tumblr Features Activist Alexandria Student

ALEXANDRIA, VA -- T.C. Williams sophomore Ana Humphrey is featured on a new Tumblr series that features local activists. Her story about how she helps the environment was featured Thursday on the site.

The Tumblr series spotlights individuals who positively impact their local community, and Humphrey's environmental activism was recognized in recognition of Earth Day on April 22.

The student at T.C. Williams High School STEM Academy launched the Watershed Warriors Initiative, a project to help the local community learn about wetlands, watersheds and the environment. She was awarded a $2,000 grant by Act for Alexandria to give hands-on lessons and experiences to fifth graders in the Alexandria area.

Humphrey wrote on Tumblr that her 7th grade class restoring a wetland got her engaged in environmental science, and providing hands-on lessons rather than textbook lectures can get her peers interested too.

"What started as an initiative to make science active and increase environmental awareness has grown to become a force of 200 students putting science into action to improve the local environment," she wrote. "The students we teach take what they learn in the classroom and apply it to real life, improving their own community."

Tumblr partnered with the nonprofit Earth Force, a non-profit organization engages young people to improve the environment, to recognize Humphrey and other environmental activists.
