So far, Nyree Wright has raised nearly $2,000 and has about 60 days to reach her goal of $65,000. Cat-lovers could book time at the cafe to spend time with the felines while enjoying some refreshments (she hopes to add wine to the cafe’s evening hours) and think about adopting a cat.

Wright says in her proposal that she’s a cat-lover, adopting her current 20-year-old cat, Sweet Pea, when it was a month old at an animal shelter. She wants to help other cats who are available for adoption by featuring them at the cafe. Adoptions would be handled by a cat rescue/shelter partner.

Cat cafes are a trend — D.C. recently got its first cat cafeCrumbs & Whiskers — over the summer, opening in Georgetown. At Crumbs & Whiskers, 23 cats have been adopted in two months, according to a recent story in WUSA-9.

Wright is working with City officials in Alexandria to determine the location as well as researching information about rescue partners and the regulations needed for a combined cafe/wine bar with cats in the same space, WUSA reports.
