Dark Sky Friends Supports George Mason University for 2025 Space Day

Championing Responsible Outdoor Lighting to Help Prevent Light Pollution

Dark Sky Friends, a non-profit advocate for preserving the nighttime environment, was proud to announce its sponsorship and involvement in George Mason University’s fourth annual Space Day event this past week. The free, public event, hosted by George Mason’s College of Science, was designed to inspire the next generation of space explorers, scientists, and engineers by showcasing the latest advancements in space science and technology.

Dark Sky Friends hosted an interactive exhibit at Dewberry Hall, demonstrating the impacts of light pollution on astronomical observation, human health, and nocturnal ecosystems. The exhibit highlighted the importance of "responsible outdoor light at night" (ROLAN) and provided attendees with practical solutions for their own homes and communities. This partnership underscored the shared mission of both organizations to foster a deeper connection to the cosmos and the natural world.

“We were thrilled to have Dark Sky Friends part of George Mason University’s College of Science Space Day,” said Peter Plavchan, Ph.D, Dark Sky Friends member and George Mason University full professor of astronomy and physics. “This event was a fantastic opportunity to engage with a passionate and curious public. Dark Sky Friends showed us that a clean, dark sky is not just for astronomers; it’s a crucial resource that benefits everyone. By showcasing the wonders of the night sky, Dark Sky Friends inspired more people to learn more about light pollution prevention.”

Dark Sky Friends' presence added a critical educational component, linking the marvels of space exploration directly to the importance of protecting our local environment.
