16 VA, DC Companies Make 2018 Best Midsize Employers List: Forbes

Book publisher Penguin Random House is the best midsize employer for 2018 in America, according to Forbes’ annual rankings of best employers in the country. The shoe and clothing company New Balance, along with St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, L.L. Bean and TripAdvisor all made the top 10.

Forbes’ rankings include 500 companies that have at least 1,000 employees. On the list are 16 companies that are based in either Virginia or Washington, D.C. The highest-ranked Virginia employer on the list is George Mason University (No. 54), which is headquartered in Fairfax. AARP is the highest-ranked company headquartered in DC at No. 83 on the list.

• James Madison University, No. 96, Harrisonburg, Virginia
• Old Dominion University, No. 100, Norfolk, Virginia
• Genworth Financial, No. 102, Richmond, Virginia
• AFSC/Magellan Federal, No. 300, Arlington, Virginia
• Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, No. 409, Williamsburg, Virginia
• ICF International, No. 415, Fairfax, Virginia

Here are all the Washington, D.C., companies on the list:

• AARP, No. 83, Healthcare & Social
• U.S. Government Accountability Office, No. 190, Government Services
• Court Services and Offender Supervision Agency, No. 213, Government Services
• Hogan Lovells, No. 231, Professional Services
• Arnold & Porter, No. 255, Professional Services
• International Monetary Fund, No. 292, Banking and Financial Services
• Gallup, No. 350, Business Services & Supplies
• Pepco Holdings, No. 398, Utilities
• Department of Education, No. 412, Government Services

Forbes partnered with market research company Statista to compile the list. Statista surveyed 30,000 people, asking respondents to rate how likely they’d be to recommend their employer to others, Forbes explains. Respondents were also asked to nominate organizations outside of their own, according to Forbes.

Penguin Random House jumped 32 spots to claim the No. 1 ranking on the list. Forbes says an entrepreneurial spirit shapes the employee experience at the company, playing a big role in recruiting as well as retention.
