2 Fairfax Businesses Honored With Eakin Philanthropy Awards

Fairfax County Park Foundation announced the recipients Thursday of the 2021 Eakin Philanthropy Awards​.

FAIRFAX CITY, VA — Fairfax Memorial Funereal Home and Fairfax Memorial Park, which are located on Braddock Road south of the city, are among the recipients of this year's Fairfax County Park Foundation's Eakin Philanthropy Awards.

The foundation announced the recipients of this year's awards on Thursday. The award is presented to organizations whose efforts contribute to the county's park system.

Since 2003, Fairfax Memorial Funereal Home and Fairfax Memorial Park have partnered with the park authority to sponsor Braddock Nights. Over the years, the funeral home and memorial park have donated more than $78,000 to fund the annual summer entertainment series. They also sponsored the Arts in Parks children's series in 2020 at Wakefield Park in Annandale.

The foundation also recognized the contributions of the following organizations and individuals with Eakin Philanthropy Awards:

  • Wayne, Angela and the Valis family - For the past 10 years, the Valis family has been actively involved in numerous events at county parks. In 2017, they paid for the TrackMan 4 Golf Valis Family Learning Center at Pinecrest Golf Center in Alexandria. They also funded two new picnic shelters in Burke Lake Park's children's area.
  • Friends of Colvin Run Mill - This volunteer group was recognized for its help in preserving and protecting the historic Colvin Run Mill. It's also donated and provided more that $185,000 in support to the foundation since 2010.

This year's recipient of the Eakin Award will be honored at the Elly Doyle Park Service Award ceremony in November.
