3 Killed As SUV Hits Truck, Catches Fire On I-66: VA State Police

FAIRFAX, VA — Three people were killed Sunday and two drivers have been charged with reckless driving after an SUV crashed into the back of a truck carrying oxygen tanks on Interstate 66 on Sunday, Virginia State Police said Monday.

None of the victims have been identified.

The crash happened about 4:10 p.m. on the westbound I-66 express lanes at milemarker 64.3, state police said.

A truck transporting oxygen tanks was stopped in the right travel lane of the express lanes when it was hit in the rear by a Honda Pilot, state police said.

The Honda caught fire, and all three people in it died at the scene, state police said.

The investigation found there was an incident involving the truck and a Toyota 4Runner before the crash, state police said.

They did not give details about the incident, but said both the Toyota driver and the truck driver have been charged with reckless driving, "following consultation with the Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office."

Neither driver was identified.

The I-66 express lanes were closed until about 11 p.m. Sunday following the crash, state police said.

The crash remains under investigation.
