Crash Kills 2 Oakton High School Students, Injures Third: Police

OAKTON, VA — Two Oakton High School students were killed and another student was injured early Tuesday afternoon when a BMW ran off the road and hit them as they were walking on a sidewalk near the intersection of Blake Lane and Five Oaks Road in Fairfax, according to the Fairfax County Police Department.

The three students were taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, police said. Later Tuesday afternoon, Fairfax police said two of the students had died at the hospital.

Around 1 p.m., officers had closed off access to southbound Blake Lane at the Five Oaks Road intersection to allow the Crash Reconstitution Unit to evaluate the scene, which had been cordoned off with yellow tape.

At the intersection, a dark SUV sat with its front end smashed. About 100 feet south on Blake Lane, a white BMW with temporary tags had damage to its front and sides.

The white BMW was speeding southbound on Blake Lane when it collided with a Toyota 4Runner that was turning left onto Five Oaks, WTOP reported. The BMW then ricocheted off the side of the road and hit the three high school students who were walking on the sidewalk, police said.

Police said two teens inside the BMW were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. There were rear passengers in the BMW who fled the scene on foot, but police know who they are, ABC7 reported.

A Verizon utility pole and the mailbox of a home on Blake Lane was knocked down. The pole laid in the street and wood shrapnel littered the roadway and nearby grass.

A Dominion Energy worker said the only one home — the one where the pole had been knocked down — had lost its power due to the crash.

The Blake Lane/Five Oaks Road intersection is located north of the City of Fairfax.
