Travelers Can Expect Significant Delays This Weekend Due To Overnight Beltway Closures

Virginia Department of Transportation plans to close all lanes of the Outer Loop every night this weekend in Fairfax County.

FAIRFAX, VA — Late-night drivers traveling through Fairfax County this weekend can expect to encounter significant delays, as all southbound lanes of the Outer Loop will be closed for extended periods of time.

The multi-night closure will allow Virginia Department of Transportation work crews to continue installing the bridge beam at the I-66/I-495 interchange, as part of the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project. The 495 Express Lanes South and several express lane ramps will also be closed.

The overnight closures are planned to take place on Friday, from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. on Saturday. They'll continue on Saturday from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. on Sunday. The final closure will occur from 9 p.m. on Sunday to 5:30 a.m. on Monday.

VDOT will close two lanes of Outer Loop traffic during the following time periods:

  • Friday, from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.
  • Saturday, from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m.
  • Sunday, from 9 p.m. to 5:30 a.m.

  • Friday and Saturday, from midnight to 5 a.m.
  • Sunday, from 11:30 p.m. to 4:30 a.m.

Motorists traveling southbound on the Beltway will be directed to follow I-66 West to the Nutley Street exit, where they'll continue onto the I-66 East ramp. From there, they'll travel back to the interchange and use the ramp for I-495 South.

The I-66 West ramp to I-495 South will be closed to traffic both Friday and Saturday, from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m., and Sunday, from 11:30 p.m. to 4:30 a.m. Motorists will follow the same detour to the Nutley Street exit.

Motorists traveling southbound on the Beltway will be directed to follow I-66 West to the Nutley Street exit, where they'll continue onto the I-66 East ramp. From there, they'll travel back to the interchange and use the ramp for I-495 South. (VDOT)
