Vienna, VA, August 2012 - Leadership Fairfax, Northern Virginia’s premier leadership organization, is proud to announce the appointment of Elizabeth Murphy as the President and CEO effective August 27th, 2012. Ms. Murphy brings more than 10 years of relevant industry experience to her new role having previously served as President/CEO of the Fairfax Symphony Orchestra. Ms. Murphy replaces Karen Cleveland, LFI’s Vice-Chairman of the Board, who has served as interim CEO of Leadership Fairfax since November 2011.
Chairman of the Board, Matt Brennan of the Brennan & Waite law firm, led the candidate search for the CEO position. “We are thrilled to have Elizabeth take the reins at Leadership Fairfax. Her infectious enthusiasm and deep understanding of nonprofit management and community stewardship will serve our organization very well. I look forward to working with her to increase our effectiveness in Fairfax County and to grow our three excellent leadership programs.”

Murphy said "I am looking forward to working with the Board, the alumni, and the current program participants to increase Leadership Fairfax’s status as an integral part of the Fairfax County community." In her previous position, Elizabeth oversaw the planning and execution of the symphony’s public concerts, education and outreach programs, and fundraising events, which numbered up to 30 per year. She implemented a marketing strategy that resulted in a 10% increase in single ticket sales to the orchestra’s concerts. She also identified and solicited foundation funding for new and existing projects, increasing such funding overall by 25%.

Ms. Murphy served as a review panelist for the Virginia Commission for the Arts and the Arts Council of Fairfax County. She was the state-wide Co-Chairman of the 2012 initiative “Minds Wide Open: Virginia Celebrates Children and the Arts.” She also has served as a board member for Virginians for the Arts, and as a member of the Major Arts Organization panel in Virginia. In addition to her work duties, Ms. Murphy holds several key volunteer positions in the community with school and athletic organizations, including membership development, fundraising, and event planning. Ms. Murphy is a graduate of the College of William and Mary. She lives in Oakton, VA with her two children.

Leadership Fairfax is a nonprofit corporation dedicated to finding, training and growing leaders in Northern Virginia. Through its three programs, LFI, ELI and now LLP, Leadership Fairfax seeks to build leaders who raise the tide not only in their organization or local community but in the whole Northern Virginia area. Based on an experiential model, each class member learns about community needs and how to address problems and seek solutions. Our alumni have logged over 300,000 volunteer community service hours serving nonprofits and Fairfax County Advisory Boards and Commissions, providing direct resource development and program services, and becoming elected officials.
