About Saturday Night

....when the weather is right, parents are behaving, the ump is consistent and the grill is going, Little League Baseball can be special.

Little League baseball can be kind of weird with its pitch counts and time limits. Not to mention teams wearing the same color jerseys!!! Last Saturday night both teams wore Red.

It can be tough to know what is going on, especially if you are chatting and not paying full attention.

But when the weather is right, parents are behaving, the ump is consistent and the grill is going, Little League Baseball can be special.

Saturday night, saw 2 teams bang the ball around (5HRs - 3 back to back to back!) and make plays right down to the last inning.

Final inning, "Bad" guys are up 14-11. Twins (my son's team) quickly post 2 runs to make it 14-13.

Now everybody is paying attention.
Both dugouts and bleachers are into it, pulling for their side.

My son, Miles, steps to the plate with 2 outs and his team down by 1. He hits a high fly ball deep to left field. A routine outfield play, but this is Little League and sometimes nothing is routine... the sure 3rd out is dropped!

Moans and groans from the 1st base bleachers.
Yells and screams from the 3rd base bleachers.

Miles, who can "scoot", pulls up at 2nd.

He steals 3rd.

They say Mothers always know.

True.

But there are times when Dad knows too.

At this point, I nudged someone who was paying attention and told him he needed to really pay attention because a play at the plate was coming up.

He said, "2 outs, 1 run game, decent bat at the plate. No way"
I said, "Yes way. Watch!"

The next pitch, Miles measured the pitcher's delivery. Then he went nearly half way down the line to check the pitcher's and the catcher's focus.

They were asleep.

Or maybe they thought he wouldn't dare.

The pitcher gets the sign. Comes set. Starts his windup....

Its a funny thing to watch someone race a baseball. Despite what your eyes see, your brain tells you its a race the base runner can not win.

But this time, somehow, the base runner beat the ball by sliding just under the tag.

SAFE!!!!!!

My boy stole home!!!!!!!

Fun to be a part of a memory. I and others will be talking about the time we saw Miles steal home with 2 outs for some time.

"Hey did I tell you about the game I saw Saturday night?"
