Sharon Bulova, chairman of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, announced Monday that she will take some time off this month to seek medical treatment.

On her Facebook page, Bulova said she’ll take advantage of the Board of Supervisors’ August recess to undergo outpatient surgery to treat a thyroid problem. The procedure will involve the removal of a nodule on the side of her thyroid, along with part of the gland, she said.

In March, Bulova said she struggled with a paralyzed vocal cord, which affected her ability to speak. Her voice returned, but follow-up medical tests detected the nodule.

The chairman said she will stay in touch with emails, her office and county staff. “I look forward to being back in the saddle after the Labor Day holiday weekend and serving as your Chairman.”
