Cavs Head to Patriot Semifinals

Next stop, regional tournament.

Woodson’s girls lacrosse team opened the first round of the Patriot District tournament at home on Friday with a 16 – 10 win over T.C. Williams of Alexandria.

The Cavaliers, who maintained a narrow lead most of the game, finally pulled away late in the second half after the Titans had closed the gap to two goals, 11 – 9, with six minutes to go.  

With the win, the Cavaliers advance to the semifinal round of the tournament scheduled for next week at R.E. Lee High School in Springfield. The win also assures Woodson a spot in the upcoming Northern Region tournament.

The Cavaliers were led on offense by senior captain Elena Obregon, who combined with freshman Isabel Obregon and junior Laura Dunn to record most of the Cavaliers’ goals. Woodson’s offense also featured strong play from senior captain Leah Williamson, juniors DeeDee Montgomery and Sabrina Elliot, sophomore Kelly Stegner, and freshman Jasmine Kim.

On defense Woodson received staunch efforts from senior captain goalie Victoria Vinall and a host of other Cavs, including  seniors Grace Finnerty, Ali Kiviat and Morgan Willard, and juniors Meghan Smiga and Katie Hayes.

The Titans were led by the all-around strong play of midfielders senior Tiana Barlow and sophomores Allegra Benites and LauraLee McHugh.
