As the pandemic eases in our area, many residents are eager to experience the energy and excitement of in-person cultural arts events. Artists who produce, compose, write, present, or support dance, literary arts, media arts, music, theatre, visual arts, or related arts are encouraged to apply for a grant from the City of Fairfax Commission on the Arts.

The commission’s grant program provides public support for the growth and development of local artists and arts organizations; offers a myriad of diverse, cultural arts activities; and provides equal access to city arts resources.

The grant program has previously funded projects at the Fairfax Academy for Communications and Arts, City of Fairfax Theatre Company, Fairfax Art League, Acting for Young People, and many other creative endeavors.

The 2021-2022 grant application is available on the City of Fairfax website. Applications are due by 5 p.m. Friday, September 24. All applications must be submitted electronically.

In response to the global COVID-19 pandemic, the commission dedicated last year’s grant program to encouraging, envisioning, and building new futures for artistic craft. Notably, it encouraged applications that emphasized artistic creations in virtual environments, as well as outdoor “no-contact” projects. Applications for live, in-person projects are preferred; however, the commission will review applications for temporary outdoor installations, such as “drive by” art or lighting projects.

The commission recognizes that virtual programming during the pandemic allowed performances and events to be provided online to a wide audience, including some viewers who may not have been able to attend a live event in or near the city under any circumstance. Commissioners see merit in continued video recording of live events and will consider a proposal for an entirely virtual event, assuming the priority to support in-person events is honored and funding is available.

Artists and arts organizations that provide innovate or emerging arts activities, program for the public, or programs that expand the city’s existing cultural arts offerings and encourage tourism, economic vitality, and civic engagement are eligible to apply for a Commission on the Arts grant.
