City Of Fairfax: Weather Alert: Heat Advisory Today; Sherwood Center Serves As Cooling Center

The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for the region from noon to 8 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 13. Heat index values of 105ºF to 108ºF are possible. Additionally, isolated severe storms along with isolated instances of flash flooding are possible during the afternoon and evening hours.

The Stacy C. Sherwood Community Center, 3740 Old Lee Highway, will be open as a cooling center from 1 - 6 p.m. Aug. 10-13. Please remember to implement appropriate health guidelines (social distancing and mask-wearing) as appropriate.

The Heat Index is a measure of how hot it really feels when relative humidity is factored in with the actual air temperature. As an example, if the air temperature is 96°F and the relative humidity is 65 percent, the heat index — how hot it feels — is 121°F.

Remember: many public buildings, including libraries and community centers, can serve as cooling centers. Be sure to check the facility website or call the facility to confirm access and hours.
