City of Fairfax Schools honored over 95 students at their regular school board meeting on Monday. Students from Lanier Middle School (LMS) and Fairfax High School (FHS) were honored for athletics, the arts, environmental efforts and academic achievement.
A sampling of awards presented at the meeting include:
- Two FHS seniors qualifying as a National Merit Semifinalist, representing less than 1% of the nation's high school graduating seniors.
- Two FHS seniors qualifying as National Achievement Outstanding Participant, scoring in the top 3% of more than 160,000 Black Americans in the 2014 National Achievement Program when they took the 2012 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying test (PSAT/NMSQT).
- Fifteen National Merit Commended FHS students recognized for exceptional academic promise on the 2012 PSAT/NMSQT.
- Sixteen FHS students that attended Governor's School, a five week summer enrichment program sponsored by the Virginia Department of Education.
- FHS Varsity Cheerleaders, for their 6A division state championship.
- Nine FHS students qualifying for Boys and Girls State, a non-partisan program to develop civic leadership.
- One FHS student who won several national awards at the National Latin Convention of the National Junior Classical League.
- One LMS eighth grader who placed first in the junior division of the Asian American Music Society International Competition.
- Thirteen students and five LMS teachers for their work to get LMS recognized as a Virginia Naturally School, a recognition program of Commonwealth Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, Department of Education and Department of Environmental Quality.
"I continue to be in awe of the amazing students we have in the City of Fairfax Schools. Awards for academics, the arts, athletics, environmental stewardship, and more speaks to the broad range of talents we have in our buildings," said Dr. Peter Noonan, Superintendent of the City of Fairfax Schools. "When I think about what we collectively want for our next generation of leaders, these awards personify what that would look like. It is events like last night that remind us of the extraordinary power of youth and the wonderful opportunities that are provided to all students in our great public schools."
