Deer Sterilization Monday and Tuesday in Fairfax

An outside agency will corral does, hoping to stem the influx of deer, according to Fairfax Police.

FAIRFAX, VA — A bit of deer birth control is coming to the city Monday and Tuesday, courtesy of White Buffalo Inc., according to Fairfax officials.

Namely, the wildlife specialists will find however many does they can, tranquilize them and then sterilize them.

They will do so via spotlight searches and radio tracking devices, and if you find a few deer hanging out in your backyard, call the city to alert the deer-keepers.

Here's the deal: once does are found, they're actually taken to police headquarters, where they're sterilized, tagged, observed and then released.

White Buffalo personnel will conduct the searched at night, and will be accompanied by police officers and animal control officers.

From White Buffalo: "Fairfax City needed a solution to address landowner concerns about deer conflicts. They had considered archery hunting, but for a variety of reasons, the City Council voted against it. Local animal advocates from Humane Deer Management, Pets Limited and Wildlife Rescue Inc., stepped in and arranged a meeting with White Buffalo Inc. and the city administration."

Thus became the partnership.
