Maine Woman And Two Children Were Killed In A Multi Vehicle Crash On I-66

Police identified 28-year-old Lacquora Smith of Alfred, Maine​ as the driver killed in Thursday's multiple vehicle crash on I-66.

FAIRFAX, VA — Virginia State Police identified 28-year-old Lacquora Smith of Alfred, Maine as the driver killed in a multiple vehicle crash that occurred early Thursday morning on I-66 in Fairfax County, according to a police release. Two girl passengers, who police did not identify, were also killed in the crash.

VSP responded at 3:06 a.m. for the report of a multiple vehicle crash on eastbound I-66. Their investigation revealed that a 2012 Honda Crosstour was heading east on the highway when the driver lost control near the 64-mile maker. The car struck a 2015 Toyota Rav and then continued off to the right of the roadway and hit the guardrail. The Honda then careened back into traffic, hitting the Toyota a second time before spinning into the eastbound lanes and colliding with a tractor trailer.

In addition to Smith, the Honda Crosstour contained four children as passengers. Two girls, one 4 and the other 6, died at the scene. The two other children, one a 7-year-old girl and a 2-year-old were taken to Fairfax Inova Hospital to be treated for non-life threatening injuries.

The driver of the Toyota SUV was also taken to a nearby hospital to be treated for non-life threatening injuries. The driver of the tractor trailer was not injured, according to police.

In the aftermath of the crash, all of the eastbound lanes of I-66 were closed through most of Thursday morning to allow crews to clear the roadway and crash investigators to examine the scene. The Virginia Department of Transportation temporally diverted eastbound traffic for several hours at the Nutley Street exit. By 12:16 p.m., all eastbound lanes were reopened.
