"OFF WHITE" solo exhibit by Diana Adams

This exhibit will feature paintings, mixed media works, and photographs by Fairfax City based artist Diana Adams.

artist statement:

"White is the color we begin with: white paper, white canvas, white plaster.  It is the beginning of the journey.  It is the visual equivalent of nothingness.

My brain correlates colors with emotional states, like synesthesia, in which people associate word sounds with colors.  Painting, with its rich pigment options, has allowed me to explore the gamut of emotions, and there is something about drawing or painting a feeling which gets me out from under its weight.

In other words, making art is a cure for the burden of being human.

When directly faced with the drama of physical trauma or death, my mind sees white, and I have a sense of the ineffable, with nothingness and everything contained in the whiteness.  Before fainting I see white.  When I look at the sun, I see white.  When I receive shocking news, I see white.

White is the color that is beyond comprehension and it resists analysis.  It doesn't make sense, is almost invisible, and doesn't seem tactile or physical.  As whiteness is beyond words and inhospitable to form, I reached for variations of white: off-white paint colors, or materials such as tape to express paralysis, feathers for a soft floating whiteness, and glitter to pinpoint light.

These off-white pieces are about extreme emotional states: abject fear, deep mourning, and hilarity.  White is what comes before form and it is there again at the sublime end of everything"
