Overnight Closures, Detours Planned This Week For I-495/I-66 Interchange Project

FAIRFAX, VA — Motorists traveling east on I-66 in Fairfax County can expect overnight lane and ramp closures, as well as traffic stoppages, to continue this week due to the ongoing I-66/I-495 Interchange improvement project.

The closures will allow Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) work cross to install beams for the new flyover ramp from I-495 North to I-66 West.

Drivers travelers traveling I-66 and I-495 during the overnight hours are advised to avoid the area and seek alternate routes.

Overnight on Tuesday, from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., VDOT will reduce eastbound traffic on the ramp from I-495 North to I-66 West to a single lane. Drivers can expect stoppage to occur between 11 p.m. and 4 a.m.

VDOT will also close the ramp from I-495 North to I-66 East from 10:30 p.m to 4:30 a.m. Traffic be detoured north to Route 7 East. There, drivers will follow signs to I-66 East.

On Tuesday night, work crews will close the ramp from I-495 North to I-66 East and detouring drivers to Route 7 East and back to I-66 East. (VDOT)
On Wednesday and Thursday, VDOT will be closing two lanes on I-66 East approaching I-495 North from 9 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. each night. Work crews will also close I-66 East over I-495 North each night from 10:30 p.m. to 4:30 a.m.

Traffic traveling east on I-66 will be diverted to I-495 North. Drivers will exit at Route 7 East and then follow the signs back to I-66 East.

VDOT will also be closing the ramp from I-495 North to I-66 West from 10:30 p.m. and 4:30 a.m. on Wednesday and Thursday.

Westbound traffic will be diverted to Route 7 West, exit to the right to I-495 South and then exit to access I-66 West.

VDOT will also be closing the I-495 North to I-66 East ramp from 9 p.m. to 4:30 a.m. each night. Traffic will be directed to travel to the Route 7 East exit and then follow signs to I-66 East.

With the ramp from I-495 North to I-66 West, drivers will be directed to continue on to Route 7 West and follow signs to return to I-66 West via I-495 South. (VDOT)

The ramp from the 495 Express Lanes North to I-66 East will also be closed from 9 p.m. and 5:30 a.m. on Wednesday and Thursday. Drivers can expect variable message board to provide information on alternate routes.

All of VDOT's roadwork on the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project are weather-dependent and could be rescheduled in the event of inclement weather.
