Fairfax Appoints Interim Councilmember

Important dates relating to the September 12 Special Election are included.

From the City of Fairfax: On February 28, the Mayor and City Council appointed Daniel F. Drummond to fill the vacancy in the office of City Council resulting from the election of David L. Meyer as Mayor (due to his resignation from City Council to serve as Mayor following the February 7 Special Election). Drummond will serve as Councilmember until the September 12 Special Election results are certified and the newly elected Councilmember is sworn in.

Drummond, a native of Virginia, served three terms on City Council (2008-14). While on City Council, Drummond served as the City Council representative for the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments Board of Directors, for the Transportation Planning Board, and for the Virginia Municipal League finance committee. He has been a member of the Economic Development Authority, the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board, and the 2004 School Bonds Task Force Steering Committee. The Green Acres resident received a B.S. in political science from Old Dominion University and M.A. in government from Johns Hopkins University.

The Fairfax Circuit Court has issued a court order setting the special election for the Fairfax City Council vacancy for September 12, 2017, as requested by the Mayor and City Council. The Mayor and City Council selected that date after reviewing information provided by the Office of Elections and Electoral Board. Information: 703-385-7890.

Important dates relating to the September 12 Special Election include:

  • July 14: candidate filing deadline
  • July 28: Absentee voting begins
  • August 29: Last day to register to vote before the Special Election
  • September 5: Last day to request a ballot by mail
  • September 9: Last day to vote absentee in person (please note: this is a Saturday)
