Fairfax Boys Take Second, Woodson Junior Girls Take Third at States
Both teams win national bids.
Fairfax and Woodson high schools won nationals bids for their strong finishes in boys' pair and girls' junior four, respectively, at Saturday's Virginia Scholastic Rowing Association Championships at Sandy Run Regional Park in Fairfax.
Madison High School's girls' first eight took the title with a time of 4:54.1, edging T.C. Williams and Thomas Jefferson High Schools, who came in second and third, respectively. St. Alban's boys first eight took the title in their division, followed by Westfield and Yorktown High Schools.
Fairfax's boys' pair took second, edged by Christ Church and fighting to finish just ahead of Woodbridge. Woodson's girls' junior four finished third after McLean and First Colonial.
FHS petite girls' four team won second. Woodson won fifth in lightweight boys' eight, fourth in petite girls' eight, and second in petite boys' eight.
Teams who placed in the top two or three of their final heats on Saturday earned bids to the Scholastic Rowing Association of America National Championship Regatta, held on Memorial Day weekend in Camden, N.J.
