FAIRFAX CITY, VA — Trek Bicycle Fairfax is hosting a ribbon-cutting ceremony at its store on Fairfax Boulevard at 12 noon, on Friday. While most businesses host a ribbon-cutting when they're opening a new store, Trek is in a slightly different situation.

The bike shop, which is located at 10937 Fairfax Blvd., has been operating from that storefront for years as Spokes Etc. In March, bicycle manufacturer Trek purchased the business from the shop's previous owners, who chose to retire.

"For the longest time, Spokes was an authorized dealer of Trek, so we could sell Trek stuff and other brands as well," said Tyler Castaneda, sales manager of Trek Bicycle Fairfax. "In March, on paper, we became a full-blown Trek store."

What that means is that the store now specializes in selling Trek bikes and Electra Cruisers, which is a subsidiary of Trek. It also sells bicycle accessories and clothing.

Beyond that, the store hasn't changed a lot and many of the same employees are still working at the Fairfax City location.

"Buying a bike is a process," Castaneda said. "It's not as easy as just picking a certain bike online and having it shipped to your store. We want to make sure you get the right size, the right bike for your needs."

The public is invited to Friday's ribbon-cutting ceremony, where they can enjoy refreshments, prizes and find some special summer deals. All weekend, customers can visit the shop and register to win a FX1 hybrid bike — no purchase is necessary.

While the business has a new name and owner, the main sign still reads "Spokes Etc." Trek is waiting for approval from the City of Fairfax so that it can install a new sign, according to Castaneda.

"Even though we're getting a new coat of paint on the outside, it's still the same staff, still the same vibe," he said. "At the end of the day, we want people to share the same excitement that we have while riding a bike. Biking is for everyone. We're going to do what we can to achieve that and make it more accessible."
