Fairfax City Municipal Elections To Be Held In 3 Weeks

Municipal elections in Fairfax City will be held May 19 after state lawmakers rejected the governor's request to hold them in November.

FAIRFAX CITY, VA —Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam pushed back state municipal elections, including Fairfax City elections, to May 19 from May 5. The Virginia legislature rejected the governor's proposal to hold the elections in November.

The governor had hoped to protect people from the coronavirus and give candidates more time to campaign by holding the elections in November. Under his executive power, the governor is allowed to delay elections by no more than two weeks without approval from the General Assembly.

Due to the coronavirus crisis, all Fairfax City voters may vote at home through an absentee ballot. City residents who want a ballot should apply as sooon as possible. Absentee voter applications are accepted until 5 p.m. May 12. Visit vote.elections.virginia.gov to complete an absentee application.

Fairfax City is holding mayoral, city council and school board elections on May 19.

Ballots must be received in the office of elections by 7 p.m. May 19 in order to be counted. Curbside voting is being held from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays at City Hall, 10455 Armstrong Street. Call the number posted on the sign and stay in your car to vote. The last day to absentee vote curbside is Saturday, May 16.

In-person precinct voting will be available Tuesday, May 19 from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Precincts will be practicing social distancing on Election Day. Voters are asked to wear a mask. Voters can bring their own black or blue pen, but no gel pens will be accepted. Sample ballots are available for review.
