Fairfax City Officials: 'Face Coverings Must Be Worn In Virginia'

Face coverings must be worn in Virginia in all indoor public spaces, effective May 29. This coincides with the recently implemented City of Fairfax CUE Bus rule requiring patrons to wear face coverings while riding CUE.

Face coverings include handmade cloth coverings and bandanas. Click here for information from the CDC on how to make face coverings.

This requirement, to be enforced by the Virginia Department of Health, applies in the following conditions:

  • individuals age 10 and older (although the governor "strongly recommends" children age 3 and older wear face coverings "to the extent possible)
  • inside brick and mortar retail establishments
  • inside personal care and grooming establishments
  • inside places where people congregate
  • inside food and beverage establishments (except when eating or drinking)
  • on public transportation
  • when accessing state or local government services

Face coverings are not required when exercising or when eating or drinking — as well as for individuals who have trouble breathing, are unable to remove the mask, or have health conditions that prevent wearing a face covering. Click here to read Governor Northam's Executive Order 63.
