Inside The New Women-Owned Salon In Old Town Fairfax

FAIRFAX CITY, VA — Coze The Space, a new salon founded by stylists Joanne Chung and Eunice Kim, celebrated its opening Friday, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony in Old Town Fairfax.

Located at 4002 University Drive, the salon offers women’s and men’s haircuts, coloring and other services using modern techniques. Customers can choose among junior and master stylists at different prices, and some stylists also accept models.

“It took us a whole year to open this space,” Chung said during the ceremony. “There were a lot of ups and downs, and we’re so happy that it’s finally open.”

A New Salon In A Historic Building

Coze The Space was designed as a welcoming and comfortable salon where clients can relax while receiving beauty services, according to information provided for the ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Chung told Patch that she and Kim selected Fairfax City because of its central location and the historic character of the surrounding neighborhood. They were also encouraged by the number of local businesses that have remained open for long periods.

“This is our first business together,” Chung said.

The salon occupies a space in an older building above Sisters Thai. From the street, a door next to the restaurant leads to the business.

Fairfax Mayor Catherine Read praised the owners for renovating the historic property and bringing modern services to the city. She said businesses located above street level or away from the sidewalk often depend on recommendations from customers and other community members.

Business Community Welcomes Coze The Space

Representatives from Fairfax City Economic Development, the Old Town Fairfax Business Association and the Central Fairfax Chamber of Commerce attended the ceremony.

Tina Disch, executive director of the Old Town Fairfax Business Association, encouraged the owners to connect with other businesses in the neighborhood. She described Old Town’s business community as close-knit and said collaborations among local merchants could help make the area a regional destination.

Jennifer Rose, executive director of the Central Fairfax Chamber of Commerce, said the renovated salon was dramatically different from the space’s previous appearance.

“It is absolutely stunning and breathtaking what you have done,” Rose told the owners.

Earlier this year, Fairfax Economic Development awarded Chung and Kim with a Facade & Interior Improvement Grant to help defray some of the initial cost to establish their new business in the city.
