Fairfax College Students Recognized For Recent Academic Honors

Patch recognizes academic achievements of Fairfax college students who have received honors at their schools.

FAIRFAX, VA — To shine a light on the academic achievements of college students from the Fairfax area, Patch shares information provided the students' families and Merit News.

Sarah Weber Hertel of Fairfax has been selected as a 2022 recipient of a Graduate Research Grant by The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi. Hertel, who is a doctoral candidate at George Mason University, is one of 20 recipients nationwide to receive the award. The grants provide up to $1,500 to support Phi Kappa Phi members seeking funding for research. Hertel will use the money to help pay for her field work in Wales, where she will be researching the human dimensions of rewilding.

Andy Luong of Fairfax was one of the James Madison University students who will be spending their spring break serving others via the school's alternative spring break program. Luong will be helping homeless women and children find self-sufficiency at Sheffield Place in Kansas City, Missouri.

Heather McCall of Fairfax was one of the James Madison University students who will be spending their spring break serving others via the school's alternative spring break program. McCall will be traveling to Nashville, Tennessee to help Project C.U.R.E. collect and prepare medical supplies and services to people in need around the globe.

Michaela Whearty, a health science OT major from Fairfax, was named to the fall 2021 dean's at Saint Francis University, in Loretto, Pennsylvania. To earn a spot on the dean's list, a student must have a 3.500 grade point average on 12 or more credits during a single semester, with no continuing or incomplete grades.

Julius Gibson of Fairfax was among the more than 80 cadets recognized for their outstanding work during the fall 2021 semester at The Citadel. Gibson was named to the President's List at the Charleston, South Carolina school.

Haley Farmer, a member of the class of 2022 from Fairfax, was named to the fall 2021 dean's List at Loyola University Maryland. To qualify for the dean's list, a student must earn a minimum QPA of at least 3.500 for the term, provided that they successfully completed courses totaling a minimum of 15 credits during the term.
