Fairfax Council to Get I-66 Express Lanes Briefing

Virginia Department of Transportation to make presentation during work session Tuesday.

Plans for express lanes outside of the beltway on Interstate 66 will be presented to Fairfax City Council during a work session Tuesday.

Work would include replacing the existing single HOV lane with two express lanes, as well as the three general purpose lanes. Rapid bus service and park and ride lots are also planned.

The work session will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Blenheim Interpretive Center, 3610 Old Lee Highway. See a complete agenda.

Widening of I-66 will be required, but VDOT hasn’t determined how much widening will have to extend beyond the existing right of way.

The project will also include some reconfiguration of the I-66/Route 123 interchange, according to a note to council from City Manager Robert Sisson. That work may include a new access point from Route 123 to the express lanes.
