Fairfax Fire Department Now Equipped for Animal Rescue

The City of Fairfax Fire Department has expanded its service and equipment to include animal rescue and care.

The City of Fairfax Fire Department is rolling out new equipment and training care specifically designed for four-legged patients.

Recognizing a growing need for specialty equipment, the City of Fairfax announced Tuesday the Fire Department has purchased pet oxygen masks to help paramedics resuscitate animals that may have been overcome by smoke or other toxic conditions.

“Providing skilled care for pets in these type of emergencies is an important part of what we do,” said Fire Chief Dave Rohr in a press release.

15-year fire service veteran Victoria Jacobs provided training on the new equipment, instructing firefighters how to approach and assess injured animals. Jacobs, who also maintains a veterinary background, also taught firefighters proper carrying techniques for animals, basic pet first aid, and different methods to transport animals safely.

All City of Fairfax Fire Department fire trucks and ambulances now are equipped with the masks and oxygen.
