Fairfax Loses in Double Overtime To Colonials

The Rebs lost the game after a last minute goal in double overtime.

The Rebels suffered a last minute upset at Fairfax High School Tuesday night. Thomas Jefferson's Colonials pulled off a goal with less than 20 seconds remaining in the second overtime period to end the game.

Seniors Meg Murphy and Ellie Jordan lead the offensive attack for Fairfax. Murphy scored their only goal on a head shot of a cross kick from the corner to tie the game 1-1 in the second half.  Jordan seemed to be ahead of the pack on nearly every breakaway for her team.

It still wasn’t enough to overcome the Colonials. After a scoreless first half, freshman Alyssa Bruce scored a goal at the 24th minute.

“Offensively we looked strong but we’re not finishing,” said head coach Gino Leon. “We’ve got to work on finishing at the net when we get those breakaways, too many times we’re right there and can’t capitalize. We’re rushing, we’re getting so close to the goal and then rushing it.”

Leon was hit with a yellow card late in the second half for arguing a questionable no call when a Colonial player appeared to be off sides. With the playoffs looming, he is anxious and ready to see his team transmit their execution on the practice field to the games.

“The district tournament is coming up in a few weeks, so I’m looking for us to peak at the right time,” said Leon. “We’re still not where we should be, in practice we look brilliant, but we need to bring that to the games.”

The Rebels are now 4-4-1 on the season sitting at sixth place in the Liberty
District behind Langley High School. They’ll face Herndon at home on Thursday.
