FAIRFAX, VA—Fairfax City Police Chief Carl Pardiny is retiring Dec. 1 after 30 years with the department, according to a release from the city. Pardiny joined the force as a patrol officer in 1988, and became chief in 2014.

"Because I’ve walked and biked every square mile of our neighborhoods literally thousands of times, the people who live in this city are not only the folks I’ve sworn to protect, but also my friends," Pardiny said in a statement. "We’re lucky to have such wonderful people in our community.

"I’ll miss them greatly, but I know our department will continue the tradition of outreach to build bonds of trust to keep our neighborhoods, schools, streets and businesses safe."

Said acting Fairfax city manager David Hodgkins: "We’ll miss Carl’s steady and calm leadership and his uncanny ability to reach out to those in our community, regardless of their age or background."
