Ferraro, Budynas Win Two for Rebs

Singles players won their individual matches, but the team took a 7-2 loss Monday afternoon.

Fairfax High School freshman singles player Maddie Ferraro won her first away match against Marshall High School Monday at Jefferson District Park in Falls Church. The team as a whole wasn't as lucky, losing 7-2.

Junior singles player Valerie Budynas recorded the other victory for the Rebels.

The Rebels were facing a 4-2 deficit as they headed into the doubles match. They started out gaining big leads in two of three doubles matches, but were unable to hold on.

“We had big leads in two of them and the third looked pretty even too, it looked like we were winning all three," Fairfax Coach Nancy Wedden said. "We need a big ego booster. That would’ve been really nice but the matches were very close.”

Ferraro is one of only three freshman players on the team. Her strong serve and quick reflexes show why she is Fairfax' top singles player.

“It’s a big deal for her to win her match today,” Wadden said. “It doesn’t matter how many people tell you how good you are. Going out and actually getting victories is what builds your confidence.”

The Rebels get a day off before traveling to Langley High School on Wednesday.
