FHS Art in 3D (No Glasses Required)

"Personality Prosthetic" displays student work

Fairfax High School artists showed off their latest work, 3D gas masks and mounted deer, and futuristic colored pencil landscapes, to local art enthusiasts at the Adam Lister Gallery in downtown Fairfax City Wednesday night.

The group exhibit, "Personality Prosthetic," will feature FHS artists for a week. W.T. Woodson High School artists starting March 29.

“This space is well suited to three dimensional work," said Tamryn McDermott, a studio art teacher whose Art 3 and AP 3D students made up the gallery. "It is an exciting opportunity for a cohesive show for the students to see what a professional gallery space is like and what a professional looking show is all about.”

FHS students who displayed their talents at this show included:

  • Katie Ketcham, a senior planning to attend VCU for business and sculpture, displayed four pieces titled, “to see,” “pull yourself together,” “fear, and “worry,” all showing emotions through masks.
  • Stuart Farmer displayed “Sorcerers’ Man of War,” which he created using colored pencils. “A bunch of ideas came together to create this piece,” said the FHS senior.
  • Senior Lena Elhajj’s project “Reverse mantra” was inspired by a character from the “Saw” movie series. Her future plans include attending Mason for bachelor in fine arts with a career with interior design or industrial design.
  • Sarah Kang, also a senior, was inspired to make a piece that was both “decorative and useful” in her creation of the “Oh Dear” scarf hanger. Kang will be attending the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York this fall.
  • Alessandra Vazquez displayed an unnamed piece inspired by her quiet nature. She is a FHS junior.
  • Senior Ashley Walsh is headed to the Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah, GA, in the fall. Her exhibit piece was titled, “See No Evil, Speak No Evil, Hear Only the Raindrops” "which was created by Walsh taking a group of different images and mixing them all together using pastel/chalk paint.
  • Wanting to attend art school and study industrial design in the future, junior Ana Gonzales created a piece for a school assignment that was designed to display their own personalities. Hers was about shyness.

After the Fairfax exhibit, the Adam Lister Gallery will host a two-week exhibit featuring selections from students in the New Media program at George Mason University. The exhibit is curated by Sue Wrbican and Edgar Endress and begins April 13-May 2. For more information, you can visit the gallery’s website at www.adamlistergallery.com.
