Former FHS Dive Star Leads Frogs

Fairfax lost to Sideburn Run in the division's championship.

Former Fairfax High School senior Kelli Stockton led the Fairfax Frogs Diving Team this summer by winning the girls senior NVSL Division 2 Championship.

Overall, the team's outcome wasn't so lucky. The Frogs faced tough competition, including an undefeated Sideburn Run, the team who ultimately took the division's team championship.

Stockton was an all-meet selection for FHS’s dive team and the Virginia High School League state diving champion in 2010. Although she was prevented from defending her state title this past season due to weather complications beyond her control, she qualified to compete in the 2012 Olympic Trials.

“Some of our kids do swimming and diving,” said Frogs head coach Brian Dufour. “I don’t work with the divers but they are well prepared for the futures and having people like Kelli on our team provides a great example for the younger swimmers to look up to.”

Some of the team's dive events occurred during the unbearable heat wave that settled over the Mid-Atlantic region in July.

“The kids are able to be in the pool and cool off, it's more the volunteers and spectators who suffered during the heat wave,” said Mary Stinett, a parent and diving team representative for the Frogs. “Several times the pools opened up during the meets so that spectators could get in and cool off, which is not normal.”

Stinett has been with the Frogs for 14 years.

“Most people don’t hang on that long,” said Stinnett whose son Zach is a coach, and other son Austin is a swimmer and diver. Her daughter, Hannah, is also a member of the Frogs.

Three Frog divers made it to the All Star dive meet at Fairfax Swimming Pool earlier this month. The event featured 200 divers from the NVSL.  Stockton, Rachel Ward qualified for the Intermediate Girls All Stars and Michael Liev qualified for the Intermediate Boys.
